I felt very conflicted about this book. For starters, I have NEVER enjoyed a writing style more than the way Acosta writes. He could easily have been my favorite author. The narration is engaging and the pacing is excellent. The big reason I give it 3 stars is because of content. The protagonist is highly misogynistic and the casualness he treats fantasizing the abuse of women is not something I could condone. His treatment of the development of a Chicano (Mexican-American) identity is subtle throughout the novel and towards the end leads to a rather shallow presentation of the identity of a border subject (Gloria Anzaldua's "Borderlands" and Thomas Rivera's "And the earth did not devour him/Y no se lo trago la tierra" are significantly better). I think if you take this book as a point of discussion and something to be dissected then it's worth the read, however as a contained text it was a disappointment. This was an honest memoir of Oscar Zeta Acosta and his early life as a lawyer. It reads like a journal and details his mental health struggles honestly. Acosta went on to be an advocate for the Chicano rights movement. He was a very interesting man and this book doesn't disappoint.
